Nova Scotia. Dept. of Education : The origins of a provincial education department in Nova Scotia date back to the appointment of the first Provincial Superintendent of Education in 1850. A provision of the legislation of 1864 established the Council of Public Instruction, the original Department of Education. Many years later, in the 1980s, a Department of Advanced Education and Job Training was formed and the related responsibilities were transferred from the Department of Education. In 1992-93, the two Departments with education responsibilities were recombined. In 1994, responsibility for cultural affairs was assigned to the Department which was renamed the Department of Education and Culture. In August 1999 the Department was renamed the Nova Scotia Department of Education when the cultural functions of the former Department of Education and Culture became part of the re-established Department of Tourism and Culture.
