Fonds consists of a series of amateur films shot by geologist and artist, Dr. Maurice Haycock, over the course of his many trips to the Canadian Arctic. Included is rare and candid footage of various painting and sketching excursions made by Haycock with fellow artists A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris. One of the films depicts A.Y. Jackson sketching at Georgian Bay just before his death in 1974 at the age of 92. Haycock recorded scenic views, native peoples, flora, fauna, and archaeological sites. Locales include the Arctic, Eastern Arctic, Great Bear Lake, Churchill Falls, the Yukon, the North West Territories, and Georgian Bay.

Also included in fonds is a descriptive commentary by Haycock during the showing of his film about the visit of painter Lawren Harris (Group of Seven) to the Arctic in 1930 and 1932. This commentary also serves as a sound-track to the silent film included in this fonds. Also included are several additional commentaries provided by Haycock in 1982, recorded at the National Archives of Canada, when several of his films were being transferred to video.

Haycock, Maurice, 1900-1988 : Maurice Hall Haycock, mineralogist, geologist, artist, musician, photographer, and author, was born in 1900. His career contributed in many ways to cultural, historical, human, physical and economic geography, especially through his paintings of the Canadian north from Newfoundland to the Yukon to the North Pole, and his pioneering work in geology. In 1980 he won the Canadian Geographical Society Massey Medal for outstanding achievement in the field of Canadian geography. Haycock died 23 December 1988. He was survived by his wife, Katherine Blackadar Haycock, of Ottawa, Ontario.
