Columbia Pictures Industries Inc : Columbia Pictures Industries Inc. was founded in 1920 by Joe Brandt, and Jack and Harry Cohn. Originally called C.B.C. Sales Film Corporation, the company changed its name to Columbia Pictures in 1924. Columbia Pictures began on Hollywood's Poverty Row, an area housing small production companies. The company produced a number of B-movies with some successful A-pictures. Following the deaths of the Cohn brothers in the 1950s, Abe Schneider and Leo Jaffe took over leadership of the company. In 1982 Columbia Pictures was purchased by The Coca-Cola Company. Tri-Star Pictures, a company owned by Coca-Cola, and Columbia Pictures merged in 1987 to form Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. In 1989 the studio was bought by the Sony Corporation of Japan who officially renamed the parent company of Columbia and Tri-Star, Sony Pictures Entertainment.
