These case files were created and maintained by the Canada Labour Relations Board. They were transferred to the National Archives by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board which succeeded the CLRB in 1999. The CLRB, established in 1972, was a quasi-judicial body with statutory and regulatory powers pertaining to the administration of Part I of the Canada Labour Code dealing with industrial relations. The case files pertain to applications for review or amendment of board orders (530), application for revocation of bargaining rights (565, 566, 570), applications for successor rights (mergers of trade unions etc.) (580), application for declaration of a single employer (560), application for declaration of a sale of business (585), determination of existence of collective agreement (610), technological change (630), portion of public service established as a corporation (590), imposition of first collective agreement (675), religious objections to payment of union dues (660), applications for declaration of illegal strike or lockout (725), complaints alleging the violation of Canada Labour Code, Part I (a majority of the files cover this subject) (745), filing of board orders in Federal Court (760), applications for access to employers' premises (800), and complaints alleging the violation of Canada Labour Code, Part II (safety of employees and references to the Board of Safety Officers' reports (950). The numbers in brackets correspond to the file categories. Boxes 28-31 contain recordings of some CLRB hearings. It is recommended that these examined at the same time as the corresponding hard-copy case file to determine if a recordings exists of a hearing. This is not indicated in the finding aid. Each case file (paper) contains correspondence pertaining to the matter at hand, legal advice and copies of court records in some instances. registry.

Custodial history:

Two pockets complementing court cases were added on November 5, 2018 after they were returned by the creating institution. Pocket 13817-C was added to box 19 and 14017-C, to box 21.
