Fonds consists of oral history interviews of Ottawa Valley residents by Joan Finnigan, carried out in preparation for her books on the subject including: Some of the stories I Told you were true; Giants of Canada's Ottawa Valley; Laughing all the way home; and Legacies, legends & lies. Also included in fonds is a recording of a narrative poem written and read by Finnigan entitled Coming over a country of no lights.

Finnigan, Joan, 1925-2007 : Joan Finnigan (1925-2007), was born in Ottawa to Maye Finnigan and Ottawa Senators hockey legend Frank "The Shawville Express" Finnigan. Educated at Lisgar Collegiate, Carlton University and Queen's University, Finnigan began her career as a teacher and reporter for the Ottawa Journal. During the 1960s and 1970s she worked for both CBC radio and the National Film Board. It was during this period that she wrote the Genie award-winning NFB screenplay The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar (1969). She wrote 28 books, many focusing on the history of the Ottawa Valley. Together with her husband, Grant MacKenzie, whom she married in 1949, Finnigan had three children, Jonathan, Roderick and Martha McKenzie. Finnigan died in Ottawa on Sunday August 12, 2007 at the age of 81
