Northern Forestry Centre (Canada) : The Northern Forestry Centre (NFC) in Edmonton, Alberta, carries out federal forest research and policy development in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. On 10 June 1971 the Research Laboratory at Edmonton, became the Northern Forest Research Centre. The name later changed on March 1985 to the Northern Forestry Centre. The NFC is one of five regional research and development centres maintained by the Canadian Forest Service (CFS). Although each province is responsible for managing its forest resources, the CFS addresses national and international issues affecting Canada's forests as a whole. The NFC provides essential forest research to secure the social, economic and environmental value in four major program areas: Forest Biology; Forest Resources; Marketing and Operations; and Industry, Trade and Economics. In addition, the NFC carries out the Model Forest Program and First Nation Forestry Program in the region. 1167
