Dr. Jacob Mountain (1744-1825) was the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec from 1793 to 1825. He brought his family with him to Canada in 1793. His son, George Jehoshaphat Mountain (1789-1863), became the third Bishop of Quebec in 1837 and held this office until his death in 1863. Right Rev. Dr. George Mountain and his wife Mary Hume Thomson had three daughters and two sons. His daughter, Harriet Mary Mountain (1816-1893), married Jasper Hume Nicolls (1818-1877) who was the first Principal of Bishop's University in Lennoxville and held this position from 1845 until his death in 1877. They had two sons and three daughters, including Rev. Gustavus George Nicolls (1852- ?) who married Julia Louisa Avery Carter in 1884. Their son Jasper Henry Hume Nicolls was born in 1886.Additional information:Custodial history:The fonds was donated to the National Archives by Elizabeth C. Tucker of Ottawa, Ontario in 1984. It had passed into her hands through her late husband's first wife, Constance Nicolls. She was probably a daughter or heir of Jasper Henry Hume Nicolls (1886-after 1966) of Ottawa who was the last person to have added to the fonds. He was a grandson of Jasper Hume Nicolls and Harriet Mary Mountain who brought the Nicolls and Mountain families together through marriage.Associated material note:The Nicolls/Mountain family fonds at Bishop's University Archives may include material that was not copied by the National Archives for the Rev. Jacob Mountain collection. The National Gallery of Canada holds a portrait of the Tannatt family, ca. 1775 by Henry Benbridge, that was donated by Jasper Nicolls.Related material:Researchers should also consult the Nicolls family fonds, the Rev. Jacob Mountain collection, and the Rev. George J. Mountain fonds at the National Archives whose provenance overlaps with the Nicolls and Mountain family fonds.Source:Private -
