Item is an oil painting by Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson which, according to the donor and niece of the artist, Naomi Jackson Groves, was painted by A.Y. Jackson in 1908, during his second trip to Europe (1907-1909). Depicted is the outside of a large, green coloured, two door, Gothic style arched wooden gate set in a stone wall with a smaller, single door, gate to the immediate left, the two separated by a part of the wall. In front of, and to the right of the main gate is (what appears to be) a two-sectioned (farm?) building covered by a red (thatched?) roof. The larger building closest to the wall rises above the top of the wall with the smaller white stucco building in the foreground. The latter contains a window and a green door at the side with some chickens feeding nearby. To the left and outside of the main gate, close to the smaller gate, is a tree in bloom, whose height extends to the top of the wall. In the left background, behind the stone wall can be seen the upper part of a large building.

Source of title:

The title for this painting was provided by the Fraser-Pinney's auction house in their catalogue description of the lot. The location of the site of the painting, Etaples, was determined by Dr. Naomi Jackson Groves, niece of the artist.

Custodial history:

Acquired by the Montreal art critic, Laberge of "La Presse", in the 1930's from the artist and subsequently passed on in his family.--Staff of Fraser-Pinney's., Acquired by the donor and niece of the artist at the Fraser-Pinney's auction sale of 24/XI/1993, in Montreal (lot # N374).
