Fonds consists of portraits of Nicol Hugh Baird (1796-1849), engineer and inventor, and his wife Mary Telfer (nee White, born after 1808-died 1847), the latter depicted holding her infant daughter Mary Telfer Baird (1832-1918). The portraits were painted by the itinerant American portrait artist Nelson Cook (1817-1892), who signed and dated the paintings 1833 on the verso of each portrait.

Physical description note:

Both portraits are in their original frames, which will require some restoration.

Note on the state of conservation:

Both portraits require cleaning and (most likely) re-lining due to the extreme fragility of their canvas supports, as well as re-stretching - the overall condition of their existing stretchers to be assessed. On the portrait of Nichol Hugh Baird, there is a 4 cm. vertical tear in the canvas near the lower right edge opposite the sitter's hand. On the portrait of Mary Telfer White holding her daughter, there is a 1.6 cm. split in the canvas at the top of the child's nose.
