This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accession. Sub-series consists of files created by Owen Michael Meehan during his career with the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The records consist of Meehan's research notes and manuscripts for his historical studies. This record of CHS development and activities is especially valuable for the years 1883-1947. Issues of "Soundings", files concerning preparation for the CHS Centennial in 1983 and many valuable photographs from the early 1920s to the late 1960s form part of this sub-series.

Biography/Administrative history:

Meehan, O. M. (Owen Michael) : Mr. Owen Michael Meehan graduated from the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1929 with a degree in civil engineering. He joined the CHS in 1930, spending his first four years with Hydrographic Shore and Ship parties working on the Upper St. Lawrence River, Lake Winnipeg, Hudson Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1935 he joined the Tidal and Current Survey Division of the CHS and worked in the Lower St. Lawrence. In 1948 he was reassigned to hydrographic work under the supervision of F.C.G. Smith, the Superintendent of Charts. In his later years, Meehan began an intensive study of the history of the CHS and published many articles in the CHS in-house publication called "Soundings". He served as editor of "Soundings" during the 1960s. RG139 accession record
