Description:

Mary, whose mother has instructed her about love, marriage, and sex, leaves her boyfriend Paul to become a nurse in a New York hospital. Vera, encouraged by her mother to marry a rich man, takes and apartment from a young millionaire who promises marriage but only gives her syphilis. Mary and her doctor treat Vera and show her examples of the ravages of the disease. Mary meets other suffering women: an Irish servant girl betrayed by a chauffeur who dies after her baby is born; a garment worker who contracted syphilis from a soldier's forced kiss; and the invalid wife of a wealthy man whose philandering caused her condition, the blindness of their child, and the suicide of one of his conquests. Paul, about to enlist, suggests he and Mary have sex before he goes. Disappointed in him, Mary also rejects the proposal of her doctor. Mary and the doctor enlist and go overseas to serve. After seeing the kind of man he is, Mary agrees to marry him. <102mn>

This version is preceded by opening titles explaining that this is a presentation of the Health League of Canada and that the film was shown in 1932 under the auspices of the Canadian Social Hygiene Council.~5. Copyrighted by The American Social Hygiene Association.~6. The opening title sequence also states "Cooperation of the Famous Players Lasky Corporation, The National War Work Council, the YWCA, and The American Social Hygiene Association is gratefully acknowledged."~7. Some photography is credited to the Instruction Laboratory, Army Medical Museum, and Sergeant Lucien Andriot, Cinematographer.~8. This motion picture was made in 1918 to supplement the United States War and Navy Department programs for the prevention and control of syphilis and gonorrhea. ~9. According to the prologue, the "American Social Hygiene Association, the National Board of the Young Women's Christian Association, the medical profession and numerous other groups, including members of the cast, cooperated to make an authentic picture for civilian use".~10. "While the setting and costumes are 15 years old, the scientific facts, public health measures and medical treatment are as applicable today as they were then. The realistic presentation of incidents in the lives of the characters, particularly of the two young women most concerned, will stand as an appeal to the best impulses and aspirations toward fine manhood and womanhood."~11. According to Moving Picture World, Volume 44, Number 5, May 1, 1920, p. 719, the film was well-received when shown in Toronto to 20,603 people and the article reported that it was being shown in London, Ontario and other locatrions in that province.~12. According to the Canadian Moving Picture Digest, July 1, 1919, Volume 10, Number 1, p. 34, the film (originally on 5 reels) was shown to the delegates for the Canadian National Council for the Combatting of Venereal Diseases in Ottawa, on May 30, 1919. It was shown in the private theatre of the Department of Trade and Commerce admitted duty free for the occasion by the Commissioner of Customs.
