Oral history interview of Robert Conroy of Aylmer, Quebec, who talks about the Conroy family, the town of Aylmer where he grew up and the keen interest in sports, especially hockey, in the Ottawa Valley. Conroy discusses his grandfather, also named Robert Conroy, who immigrated from Ireland and amassed vast timber rights in the Ottawa Valley and in Carlow County in the Haliburton district. Later, his grandfather established prosperous mills and farms on his holdings and built the Symmes Hotel, the Watt Hotel, the British American Hotel as well as the family mansion "Lakeview" - all landmarks in Aylmer. Conroy remembers with pleasure the amusement park at Queen's Park in Aylmer, the parties in his grandfather's 60-foot drawing room at Lakeview, his work in the lumber camps in the Valley, the roller skating rink and baseball games and the rough and tumble hockey games against the formidible Shawville, Quebec, team. He also talks about several of the prominent hockey players of the time such as Hec Kilrea and Frank "King" Clancy, playing tennis at the Rideau Club and golf at Pine Lodge at Norway Bay, a popular resort in the Valley.
