Fonds consists of oral history interviews by Hal Lawrence with men and women about their years of service in the Royal Canadian Navy and the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. The interviews include officers who served in the Coastal Forces in the Motor Torpedo, Motor Gunboat and Landing Craft units in the English Channel including the raid on Dieppe. The fonds also contains interviews with officers who were commanders at the time of the unification of the Canadian Forces. Many of these interviews served as research material for Lawrence's publications entitled, Tales of the North Atlantic and Victory at sea: tales of His Majesty's coastal forces.

Lawrence, Hal, 1920- : Hal (Harold E.T.) Lawrence was born in 1920 and has resided in Victoria, British Columbia since 1980. He earned a MA degree at the University of Ottawa. Lawrence served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years beginning in 1939 and rose from a midshipman to the Commander of the Eleventh Escort Squadron. During his last shore appointment in operations research, he authored Operational Readiness (1961) and Operational Readiness Assessment (1964).

While working with the Canadian International Development Agency from 1969 to 1980, he was Senior Project Officer for overseas projects and published many technical and popular articles in MacLean's and Reader's Digest as well as authoring A Bloody War: One Man's Memories of the Canadian Navy. This autobiography won the Best Non-Fiction Award for 1979, and in 1980, the award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters. He taught in the Department of English at the University of Ottawa and was president of Ottawa Communication Consultants.

Since relocating to Victoria in 1980, he taught at the University of Victoria and was an occasional lecturer in naval history at the University of Victoria, Royal Roads Military College and the Fleet School. In the 1980s, he conducted many oral history interviews with former senior naval officers about their experiences in the RCN. He is president of the Canadian Authors Association and own the communication firm Hal Lawrence & Associates. Booklet entitled Professional-Development Skills in Inter-personal Communications, published by Hal Lawrence & Associates.
