La série se compose des documents créés pour renseigner à propos de l'administration des restrictions spéciales sur l'immigration des personnes définies comme " asiatiques " ou " Asien(ne)s ", pour la période de 1908 à 1967 environ. Les documents comprennent des dossiers de cas et un registre des immigrants entrant au Canada de 1951 à 1967 des trois pays " asiatiques " en vertu des ententes spéciales de quota d'immigration des pays d'origine. Entre 1907 et 1967, les futurs immigrants au Canada considérés comme " asiatiques " étaient sujets à des restrictions spéciales sous une série de décrets du conseil fédéraux, de même qu'à des barrières administratives non formelles. Ces contrôles étaient distincts de ceux placés sur les immigrants chinois aux termes de la Loi de l'immigration, 1885-1947, dont il est question dans la série des documents sur l'immigration chinoise (RG76-D-2, MIKAN, 134842).
Les nationalités et groupes ethniques considérés comme " asiatiques " comprenaient, à une certaine époque, les ressortissants des Indes orientales (du sous-continent indien, des Antilles, d'Afrique et d'ailleurs), la population japonaise, pakistanaise, ceylanaise, libanaise, syrienne, arabe, iranienne, les habitants des Philippines et quelques autres habitants de l'Asie de l'Est et du Moyen-Orient. Le premier motif des contrôles rigoureux et des restrictions placés sur les Japonais au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale ne concernaient pas l'immigration et les documents s'y rapportant se trouvent ailleurs. Mais tous les groupes nommés étaient sujets à des restrictions à propos de leur droit d'immigrer au Canada (et à certains égards sur leurs droits personnels et libertés une fois au pays), pour la période des premiers décrets du conseil (décret C.P. 27, 662, 919, 932, 1255, 8 janvier, 27 mars, 27 mai et 3 juin, 1908) au passage de la Déclaration canadienne des droits de 1960. Les décrets du conseil discriminatoires ont été révoqués de manière définitive qu'en 1967, lorsque les règlements en matière d'immigration incarnant le " système de points d'appréciation " pour la sélection des immigrants ont enfin passés.
