Description:

Interview of John Thomas, Captain of the CN ship Marine Nautica, aboard the ship as it sails out to sea. Thomas talks about: fishing in Newfoundland; how he learned to fish as a boy; the difficulty of earning a living by fishing; the isolation of the Newfoundland outports; the arrival of the first radio in the outport circa 1940; Thomas's getting a job with CN Marine after being a fisherman; his family history; the job of ship's master; weather hazards; and his daily routine. Actuality sounds of the ship's horn and other equipment are audible throughout the interview.
