Radio program in a series about contemporary issues in religion. This consists of interviews of various Catholic lay persons, about a recent report to Roman Catholic bishops on the state of the Church and the need for it to change with the times. The six laypersons are: insurance agent Gary [Beaton]; English professor David [Dooley]; newspaper reporter Frank Drea; homemaker Lorraine [Hay] and [Allan] and [Lettie] Morris. They are all interviewed together, about: whether it is too late for the Church to undergo renewal; a growing acceptance that laypersons can speak out about Church issues; underlying unrest among the laity and reasons for it; efforts of the Church to find common ground with other faiths; and how the Church could promote the dignity of workers and its attitudes to unions and Communism. The group feels that lay persons have specialized knowledge that can benefit the Church. There is also the growing realization that priests are overworked and cannot do all of the work in a parish, such as taking care of the finances. A member of the parish who is a chartered accountant could help out. Priests are expected to know more theology nowadays, but can delegate other functions to laypersons.
