This portrait miniature of a young officer of the 96th Regiment is possibly by Frederick Buck (1771-ca. 1839/40). In composition and style it is similar to works produced by him from 1808-1814. Nothing is known of the handsome sitter in uniform, although the treatment of the eyes and eyebrows and general pose correspond quite convincingly to other works known by the artist. He was born and worked in Cork, Ireland and practised his art there until his death. His services were in great demand during the Peninsular War when many officers passed through the busy port. His brother Adam Buck, was also a miniature painter and of the two, Adam is thought to have been the better artist.
