Series consists of 4 portraits of members of the McGillivray family. One portrait miniature is of William McGillivray (1764/65-1825), by an unknown artist. He is the older brother of Simon McGillivray (1783-1840) and both are sons of Donald McGillivray and Anne McTavish. There is one portrait miniature of Simon by an unknown artist. There are two portrait miniatures of Anne McGillivray (nee Easthope), (1808-1869), one painted when she is younger in about 1830 by an unknown artist, and one ca. 1838, about the time of her marriage to Simon, dressed in her finery, painted by Andrew Robertson (1777-1845) a well-known Scottish miniature painter.

Robertson, Andrew, 1777-1845 : Andrew Robertson (1777-1845) was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and was one of the few Scottish miniature painters to become well-known. His other two brothers, Archibald (b. 1765) and Alexander (b. 1772) all became artists. Andrew stayed in Britain, while his brothers went to America and set up an Academy. Although he had aspirations to become a doctor, he painted portraits to add to family income. He studied art under Alexander Nasmyth and Raeburn. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Old Water Colour Society from 1802 to 1842. His work was popular because he digressed from the more attractive and more frivolous types of paintings produced by eighteenth century miniaturists and painted larger scale miniatures in oil, that were richly painted and reminiscent of larger oil paintings. His sitters were prominent people including royalty, and he ranks among the best of the nineteenth century miniaturists. Foskett, Daphne. British Portrait Miniatures, London, 1963.
