Fonds consists of colour photographs (mostly negatives) illustrating the post offices of Alberta in existence since the mid-1970s. In addition, black and white photographs, taken from historical works, depict post offices of the past, including, from time to time, their postmasters.

Hughes, Neil, 1920- : Neil McKendrick Hughes was born 21 August 1920 on a farm near Vegreville, Alberta. He moved with his family to the Flatbush district in 1932. In 1940 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a pilot. He flew a combat tour in the Middle East with the Royal Air Force on Hurricane and Spitfire fighers. In 1944, Mr. Hughes returned to Europe to fly 63 combat missions with the R.C.A.F. on Typhoon dive bombers. After the war, he returned to Flatbush, where he married and took up farming.

Neil Hughes began collecting stamps as a teenager. He later began collecting postmarks. This lead to an interest in the post offices of Alberta - where they were, when they opened, when they closed, who the postmasters were, and the origins of their names. In the early 1970s, he started taking pictures of post offices, a practice that continues to this day.

He is the author of Post Offices of Alberta, 1876-2000. Correspondence with donor.
