Radio lecture by J.S. Woodsworth, National Chairman of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). This is the second of two talks. He speaks about: the CCF; criticisms of the CCF, socialism; the definition of socialism; varieties of socialism; the Regina Manifesto; the meaning of CCF objectives; capitalism; the weaknesses and injustices of the capitalist system; the economy; the Royal Commission on Price Spreads; the evils of private corporate property; support for individual private property; support for the family farm; finance; nationalization of banks and trust companies; the CCF policy on cooperative institutions and the CCF's hope for the development of a large number of cooperative institutions. Woodsworth refers to his previous talk about the failure of the Conservative Party and R.B. Bennett. He attributes this failure to the failure of capitalism. Woodsworth also speaks about: Liberalism; how it is not suited to the present situation; combines; free enterprise; how the tax on cigarettes punishes the poor; the profit by the MacDonald Tobacco Company; the exploitation of tobacco growers; the problem posed by monopolies; the view of the Liberal Party that monopolies can be dealt with by “merciless competition”; how this competition initially squeezed out small businesses and contributed to the development of monopolies; the Liberal Party’s view that lower prices will lead to greater exports; Woodsworth's view that lowering costs will lower the status of the workers; the memorandum written by the National Secretary of the CCF; the basis of CCF policies and the goals of a CCF administration; his response that workers in Canada should not have to lower their standards to compete with cheap labour in the rest of the world; inhuman working conditions in other countries; journalism; an article from the Winnipeg Free Press criticizing CCF policies on export trade; an explanation of CCF trade policy; foreign trade in a capitalist system; a low-tariff system; the Liberal Party; the trade policy of the Liberal Party; the Liberal Party's record from 1921 to 1930, its unfulfilled promises and administrative failures; social security; old age pensions; unemployment insurance; the constitution; the failure of the Liberal Party to amend the British North America Act; the relationship of organized religion to CCF policy; the relationship of Roman Catholicism to the CCF party; his refuting the criticism that the CCF is anti-religion; the CCF’s belief in equality for all and that it does not want to interfere with cultural and religious rights; a statement by the Pope that certain forms of property should belong to the State for the protection of the community; political freedom dependent on economic freedom; the CCF Manifesto and public utilities; his view that there should be state ownership of natural resources; sectors of support for the CCF and its organization for the 1935 election campaign. <27mn>
