Interview of Annie Juhala by Raili Nieminen and Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Annie Juhala was born in Ylivieska District in Oulu, Finland. She came to North America in 1914, and lived first in Michigan for 2 years, then in Utah for 4-5 years, then Virginia, and Minnesota for 3 years. She then moved to Finland, Ontario. Her father was a trapper, bushworker, and cabin-builder. He did whatever work he could get. Bushcamps were very small, were not organized, and had no unions. She was a member of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) for some time in Finalnd, Ont. They held programmes, plays, dances, and had occasional speakers, including Sanna Kannasto, Hautamaki. The FOC raised money to support the unemployed etc. through dances, and selling crafts. The FOC bought materials, and ladies donated their time and sold their handicrafts. In the truck drivers strike, Johnson was the leader, and is now 98 years old (35 years ago). Juhala says the FOC was organized by Sanna Kannasto in 1914, and the hall built 1917 or 1918. The hall closed during WWII, and Juhala was custodian at the time. She was there when the hall was searched, and hid books. She was a member of Finland Co-op, first named “Circle,” which operated in the hall 2 days a week. Later it got its own building. Mrs. Rosa Lampi, first and last member of FOC in Finland, was involved in everything. School built in Finland in 1920. <25mn>
