Sub-series consists of grant and award committee records filed in alphabetical order by research specialty and meeting period. Most files include lists of applicants (providing institutional affiliation, research topic, project title, and names of external referees), members' rating forms tabulating marks granted by individual referees for each candidate, balance sheets listing and totalling grant sums, as well as miscellaneous related notes, correspondence, and other documentation produced by committee deliberations.

The diverse grant committees of the Medical Research Council met twice a year (usually in March and November), in order to consider research funding applications for funding grants, to assemble and evaluate peer review evaluations of each application, and to divide available funding among approved grantees. Each committee represented a different research specialty and generally met during separate meeting periods in orders to assess applications for funding.
