Collection consists of 5 postal covers commemorating the First Annual (1973) Joseph Howe Festival in Halifax. The covers bear Joseph Howe Observance 5-8 October commemorative slogan die cancels. Howe was a prominent figure in pre-Confederation Canadian politics. In 1854, he was appointed Chairman of the Railway Board. Nine years later he was appointed Fishery Commissioner by the British government. After heading an anti-Confederation movement in Nova Scotia in 1866, Howe joined John A. Macdonald's cabinet as Secretary of State for the Provinces. He died in 1873.
