Inverness Railway and Coal Company : This company underwent several charter renewals and changes of name from 1874 until it was incorporated under Nova Scotia Act, 50 Vic., Cap. 60 of 3 May 1887 under the name Inverness and Richmond Railway Company, Limited to build a railway in order to exploit certain coal properties on Cape Breton Island. A 60.5 mile line between Inverness Junction on the Intercolonial to Inverness was opened for traffic in June 1901. In 1902 it officially acquired various coal mines and the name was changed to Inverness Railway and Coal Company. This company was originally owned by Mackenzie and Mann. After financial difficulties it was placed in receivership in 1915, leased by the Canadian National Railway Company in 1924 and purchased by Canadian National in 1929. RG30 General Inventory
