This sub-series is comprised of personnel dockets; individual's documents are then grouped into larger files by surname. The files are ranged in alphabetical order. They cover military and civilian personnel, as well as summer and contract employees hired by the Department of Defence.

These files consist of correspondence, memos, routing slips, transmittal notes, marginalia and clarificatory information. They were engendered by problems experienced by personnel, or reflect difficulties the Department experienced with its personnel. Some of the issues reflected here cover discharges, requests for discharges, salary/pension/benefits difficulties, promotion issues, complaints of harassment, contract conditions and so on.

This sub-series reflects the Associate Minister's work in one of the key areas of his responsibilities package, i.e. the resolution of personnel problems (in this respect, the files show the routing systems of problem resolution, as well as provide the decisions and reasons for decisions in personnel problems resolution). These files, as a whole, illuminate not only specific operational difficulties in DND's work, but comment on working conditions in the department, specific types of difficulties facing its employees and contribute to an understanding of the morale situation in the military in the 1980s. The files also demonstrate how DND's appellate system worked and the offices and instances involved. Finally, some of the files deal with collective bargaining, finance and accounting in the area of pensions and financial assistance to impoverished veterans or their survivors.
