General note:

There is some speculation as to the purpose of this item. It is small enough that it might have been used as a book plate. The donor posted a note on the item in "The Map Collector", issue no. 52 (1990), p. 46-47. A London map dealer was able to provide other examples. Correspondence between the donor and Mr. Jeffrey J. King of Stafford, England, identifies it as a visiting card or a "carte de visite" printed by P. Zaricen of Venice in 1794. The provenance has yet to be confirmed from other sources.
