The fonds documents the organization of various CAPEX exhibitions between 1851 and 1996. CAPEX are ones of the most important and significative international philatelic exhibitions to be held in Canada.

The fonds consists of textual records, graphic materials, objects and technical drawings created by the Canadian Association for Philatelic Exhibitions (CAPEX) and the Toronto Association of Philatelic Exhibitions (TAPE) while organizing and running various CAPEX exhibitions. The records document the creation of the association and the establishment and organization of CAPEX exhibitions. The fonds also contains few philatelic records.

The fonds is divided in three series: CAPEX'51, CAPEX'87 and CAPEX'96.

Canadian Association for Philatelic Exhibitions : The Canadian Association for Philatelic Exhibitions (CAPEX) began with its incorporation on July 2, 1947. The intention of the association was to encourage, promote and hold philatelic exhibitions, competitions and displays, and to encourage generally the science and hobby of philately. Membership to CAPEX would be open to all those interested in philately. Everything would be decided by majority vote and work would be carried out by standing and special committees. Annual metings are held in the second week of March to decide the activities of the following year.

Disolved on December 15, 1969, CAPEX was taken over by the Toronto Association of Philatelic Exhibitions (TAPE) the same year. TAPE is a corporation incorporated under the Corporation Act and it is registered as a charitable organization since 1974. The head office is in Toronto. CAPEX is registered and is a trade-mark of TAPE. According to Mr. Charles Verge, TAPE is an independant organization but under the control of the executive of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada. With the approved by-laws of May 30, 2003, directors of TAPE will be those of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada.

CAPEX was formed to organize an exhibition in 1951 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of government Canada issued postage stamps in Canada. The association began to organize such an event in 1947-1948. This exhibition was called The Canadian Centenary Philatelic Exhibition and it had full co-operation from the Canadian and many other foreign governments.

Three others international exhibitions were held in Toronto under the name CAPEX: CAPEX'78, CAPEX'87 and CAPEX'96. CAPEX'78, the first international exhibition organized in Canada under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie, marked the 100th anniversary of Canada's entry to the Universal Postal Union. CAPEX'87 held in the new Metro Toronto Convention Centre marked the 100th anniversary of organized philately in Canada. CAPEX'96 was the first exhibition to be organized by a new chairman, Mr. Kenneth Rowe, RDP. Vinnie Greene, RDP, chaired the previous CAPEX exhibitions.

Material of Capex 1987 and Capex 1996 was held by Toronto Association of Philatelic Exhibitions (TAPE). It was acquired in 2008 from the organization.
