Public affairs program, hosted by Peter Desbarats, which traces the growth of the separatist movement in Quebec from 1960-1970. The film describes the formation of: the Rassemblement pour l'independance nationale (RIN) in 1960; le Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) in 1963; le Mouvement Souveraineté Association Québec (MSA) in 1968; le Parti Québecois (PQ) in 1968. Footage includes RIN demonstrations in 1960; the violence, and consequent invoking of the War Measures Act, in 1970; protests during Queen Elizabeth's visit to Quebec City in 1964; confrontation between Pierre Bourgault and Pierre Trudeau during a St. Jean Baptiste parade in Montreal in 1968; demonstrations concerning the status of the French language in education in 1968; and the 1968 protest to turn McGill University into a French-language institution. Noteworthy sequences include: visits by General Charles De Gaulle in 1960 and 1968; Trudeau discussing his move to federal politics, and his position on the separatist issue; RIN president, Bourgault, giving speeches about separatism, and his opinion of Trudeau; Robert Shaw, Vice Principal of McGill University, talking about the demonstrations; and an interview with an FLQ terrorist, whose bomb killed a night watchman in Quebec City. Footage of candidates campaigning during the 1970 Quebec provincial election is also shown.
