Item is a certificate under the banner of the President of the United States of America. Dated 12 June 1862, it confers the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Sixteenth Regiment of Infantry upon Samuel E. Saint Onge and is signed by the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton and by Abraham Lincoln, "in the Eighty-sixth year of the Independence of the United States." The document is endorsed as follows: "Recorded. Volume 17, Page 81 Adjutant General's Office, June 13, 1862."
