This session at the meeting of the Association of Canadian Archivists, held during the Learned Societies Conference in Windsor, Ontario, is about Canada's access to information legislation and how it has changed the work of archivists and historians. The chairman of the session is Ian [Forsythe]. The speakers are historian Gregory S. Kealey and Eldon Frost of the Government Archives Division of the National Archives of Canada.~Kealey outlines how the act has changed the relationship of archivists and historians, emphasizing the role of archivists in enforcing the legislation. He describes the difficulties he has encountered in trying to obtain Royal Canadian Mounted Police files dating from 1902 to 1922, files that were in the National Archives and then removed from the Archives by the RCMP.~Frost compares the functioning of access to information legislation in Canada with similar legislation in the United States. He expresses the opinion that the legislation has not impeded the work of historians in Canada but that it has created more work for archivists. Peter [Bauer], the Provincial Archivist of Manitoba, comments on the presentations by Kealey and Frost. The session concludes with comments and questions from the audience.
