Audio recording of television program presented by the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers in Sudbury, Ontario. Telephone interview by Bud DeVito with Nathan Witt, chief legal counsel for the international union for 18 years and former Secretary of the U.S. National Labour Relations Board under Franklin Roosevelt. Witt states he is certain charges under the Subversive Activities Control Board will not stand up, calling evidence "ridiculous", and citing Mine Mill's vindication in all three cases of alleged communism at appeal courts in the past five years. He reports the decision has no effect on Mine Mill's right to bargain in Canada or the U.S. Telephone interview by National President Ken Smith with International President John Clark in Denver, Colorado. Clark states the SACB decision will not disrupt bargaining of Mine Mill, but that United Steelworkers of America raids are disrupting the functioning of the union; he denies that Mine Mill is communist-infiltrated, saying it is a hard-fighting militant union with ten times the democracy of the United Steelworkers. Commentary by National President Ken Smith on attempt to impose U.S. Taft-Hartley style legislation on Canadian workers: condemns Dodge and Gillis for inviting similar legislation into Canada; media reports unfavourable to Mine Mill, such as arrests of executive members Maurice Travis and Clinton Jencks, played up in headlines across Canada, whereas news of acquittals by U.S. Supreme Court seldom seen; interference by U.S. Secretary of Labour Goldberg, former Steel lawyer, in Canadian affairs; resistance of Canadian trade union movement to U.S. domination of labour as well as big business and politics. Smith says Gillis is hardly an authority on democracy after he has cancelled Local 598 membership meetings, taken away right to elect stewards, and closed the union halls in Sudbury.
