Board of Examiners for Dominion Land Surveyors : In the Dominion Lands Act of 1872, (35 Vict., c.23) provision was made for the establishment of a Board of Examiners for Dominion Land Surveyors. The Board was to act as an examining and admitting body and was to consist of the Surveyor General and eight other persons appointed from time to time by Order-in-Council. The Board in turn, was responsible for the appointment of a secretary "who shall keep a record of its (i.e. the Board's) proceedings" (35 Vict., c.23, s. 74, ss. 3). The first Board was appointed by P.C. 108 1/2, 7 May 1875. This procedure for appointment of the Secretary was followed until 1908 when, under section 9 of the Dominion Lands Surveys Act (7-8 Edw. VII, c.21), the Secretary became an appointee of the Minister of the Interior. The Composition of the Board was changed in 1899. At that time the Board's membership was reduced to three, namely, the Surveyor General and two Dominion Topographical Surveyors. The latter two were to be appointed by Order in Council. The Secretary of the Board continues to be an appointed official with his appointment now being made by the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources under the Canada Surveys Act (RSC 1970 c.L-5, s. 5, ss. 6).
