Doyle, Richard J. (Richard James), 1923-2003 : Richard J. Doyle was born in Toronto on 10 March 1923, and attended Chatham Collegiate Institute in Chatham, Ontario. After his graduation, he joined the "Chatham Daily News" as a sports reporter and quickly advanced to news editor. Doyle served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He saw action overseas with 115 Squadron (Bomber), reaching the rank of Flying Officer. He married Florence Chanda in 1953 and they had two children, Sean and Judith.

After the war he had returned to the "Daily News" in Chatham, but went to Toronto in 1951 to join the "Globe and Mail" as a copy editor and reporter. He ascended the newspaper's ranks quickly becoming editor of the "Globe magazine" in 1957, managing editor of the "Globe and Mail" in 1959, and editor in 1963. He remained as editor until his retirement in 1983, receiving the additional title of editor-in-chief in 1975. The newspaper expanded tremendously during his tenure, adopting electronic technology and staking its claim as a national newspaper with the rise of "Report on Business" as a leading voice in the business world and the introduction of simultaneous daily printing in Edmonton, Ottawa, and Halifax. A whole generation of journalists matured under his guidance and leadership, leaving an indelible stamp on Canadian journalism and cementing his reputation as one of Canada's most influential newspaper editors.

After his retirement, Doyle continued to write columns for the "Globe and Mail" until he was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1985. He was the author of two books: "Royal Story" (Toronto: McGraw-Hill, 1952) and "Hurly-burly, a time at the Globe" (Toronto: Macmillan, 1989). Doyle died 9 April 2003, just a few weeks after the death of his wife Florence on 20 March 2003.
