Agnes Etherington Art Centre : The idea for the Agnes Etherington Art Centre first began with the formation of the Kingston Art and Music Club in 1926. Agnes Etherington (1880-1954), a driving force behind the establishment of the club, worked diligently with the arts community and, in her latter years, drew up plans to bequeath her home for use as a community centre. In 1957 the Agnes Etherington Art Centre opened its doors to the public. The Centre, located at Queen's University, houses a diverse collection of some 13,000 objects including paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. The collection consists primarily of historical and contemporary Canadian art, a growing collection of 17th-century European painting and West African art, and smaller concentrations of Inuit art, ethnographic artifacts, costume, quilts, glass and silver.
