Sub-series consists of notes created and maintained by laboratory staff of the Customs and Excise Divisions . Laboratory staff conducted analytical investigations and research on a variety of beverages, liquors, and chemicals in order to determine the alcoholic strength and composition of the substances and to verify the validity of their labels. The sub-series includes Customs Division laboratory notes for the period 1896 to 1928; the examination of malted liquor exported by National Breweries and miscellaneous firms; the result of analysis of products from the Frontenac Breweries Limited; a record of vinegar tests; and Excise Division laboratory notes for the period 1921-1928. The sub-series also includes letterbooks relating to the analysis of a variety of substances, mainly alcohol products and Excise sample books listing products slated for analysis.
