Sub-sub-series consists of transcribed reference books. The first portion of this sub-sub-series contains seven reference books, at one time designated AA to GG, in which were copied various legal documents, including contracts, deeds, leases and correspondence relating to several canals -- in particular Beauharnois, Chambly, Welland, Cornwall, Trent and Lachine. (Vols. 2470-2476).
The most extensive records in this sub-sub-series are transcribed documents concerning the Beauharnois Canal, including procès-verbaux of land surveys, paylists for fencing canal lands, schedules of lands taken for canal purposes, paylists for damages, a report on the settlement of claims, 1848, prepared by Walter Shanly, and a list of deeds. Inclusive dates for this material are 1843 to 1852.
Other copied documents in this sub-sub-series relate to the Welland Canal Company, including the 1836 Directors' Report, lists of stockholders, engineers' reports and copies of correspondence dating from 1824. There is also extensive documentation on the Cornwall Canal such as claims for damages, minutes of meetings, and schedules of lands taken for the canal, 1840-1845. Documentation relating to the Chambly, Trent and Lachine Canals in the 1840s is also available in these reference books.
Also included in this sub-sub-series is Vol. 2480, originally designated as Book K. It contains transcribed legal documents, including conveances relating to the Cornwall Canal, 1834-1835; quittances for damages incurred by construction of the Beauharnois Canal, 1843- 1848, 1853-1855, deeds, 1850-1852, 1861, and quittances for seigneurial lands, 1869, numbers 198 to 225; deeds for lands connected with the Trent Canal, 1825, 1828, 1840; procès-verbaux of surveys of lots for the Lachine Canal, 1844- 1845; and documents relating to various land matters on the Lachine Canal, including estimates for damages and evaluations, 1821-1826. The first portion of this book consists of transcribed documents pertaining to the Grand Trunk Railway, including correspondence, agreements, general specifications for buildings, statements of unfinished work and rolling stock, 1856.
