Biography/Administrative history:

Unesco : During the Second World War, the Allied Education Ministers met in London and discussed the reconstruction of educational facilities in the war devastated countries. When the United Nations Preparatory Commission met in London, it was decided that a United Nations special agency would carry out this reconstruction programme. At the same time, the functions of the organization were broadened to include scientific and cultural reconstruction. The resulting agency was the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). By the late 1940's this organization had begun to take on larger tasks such as a world literacy campaign and funding to educational, cultural and scientific programmes in less developed countries. Canada participated in the wartime meetings from which UNESCO emerged and has attended all of the general conferences. In 1959 an officer was added to the Canadian Embassy in Paris to act as a permanent delegate to UNESCO. RG25 General Inventory
