Oral history interview by Guy Surprenant of Arthur Mason (joined service 1053) and J. Burke, correctional officers at Kingston Penitentiary. Topics include: fiscal penny-pinching of early days; requisition and budgeting procedures; stock taking; Doukhobor women undressing; Psychiatric services at KP and attitudes toward mental illness and behavioral disorders; comments on Roger Caron author of "Go Boy"; running of canvass shop quota system where inmates could play cards once daily quota met; importance of good vocational instructors; comments on Burt Beaupre, former KP warden; including his "decking" of a female inmate; anecdotes concerning interesting inmates; role of personnel officer; talks of time when warden knew lamost allprisoners by name; various humorous prison anecdotes; comments on Vic Richmond, former KP warden. OF SPECIAL NOTE: Mason describes how former warden, Walter Johnstone, sent to prison dump historical records of Kingston Penitentiary dating from "day one" that should have been sent to Archives in Ottawa. Mason salvaged some of the material himself, consisting of such items as committal warrants dating back to days when KP run by British Army. He claims to have donated these to KP museum. Additional topics include: home-made radio crystal sets used by inmates; brief comments on Riot of 1971 at KP; resentment of inmates to "outsiders" touring prison facilities; long-term prisoners who preferred to stay inside than leave; and Mason's views on future retirement. <1h 30mn>
