Oral history interview by Guy Surprenant of Frank Corrigan, correctional officer guard (joined service 1940), Robert Wiley, correctional officer guard (joined service 1933) and Ed Babcock, Assistant Director ONA? at Regional Reception Centre (joined service 1948) in Kingston. Topics discussed include: salaries, working hours and work routines in 1930s and 1940s; closer rapport with prisoners prior to 1960s; risk of hostage taking during work shops supervision; refusal of Doukhobor women in prison to wear clothes and eat food; events surrounding Macdonald-Minelli escape from KP; account of 1932 riot at KP, guard shooting into cell of Tim Buck and staff firings that followed; differing classification for Collins Bay P. from 1932 until 1960s. [Wiley leaves interview]. Other topics include: Protestant-Catholic quotas for upper and lower level correctional service jobs and tensions this created; hiring criteria for guards in 1930s and 1940s; working in guard towers; guard training course at RCMP barracks in Ottawa; anecdotes concerning solitary confinement and bread and water rations; pros and cons of unionization of staff; lamenting decline of work discipline, discontinuance of uniform inspection and subsequent decline in morale due to prison reform; comparison of prisoner working habits then and now; and discontinuance of custom work by inmates. <1h 12mn>
