Sub-series consists of ledgers, created and maintained by the Directorate of Records, which contain an information sheet filled out for each Canadian Army unit in Canada and overseas during the Second World War arranged by serial number. A serial number was assigned to every unit, from the level of Army to the smallest reporting unit, and was the number used by the unit when completing its war diary or corresponding with higher formations and headquarters. Serial numbers 1 to 8007 were assigned during the war. The sheet for each unit records, Serial Number, Unit Name, Militia Unit to which the Unit was affiliated, Place of formation, Military District of formation, Authority for formation, Date Authorized, Place for Re-localization after formation, War Establishment Officers and Other Ranks, Commanding Officers and Remarks, which indicate, among other things, change in strength or redesignations and conversions. The last several pages in Volume 22899 contains monthly data on reinforcements for the individual corps of the army, eg. Royal Canadian Artillery, Royal Canadian Army Signal Corps, etc. The researcher can identify the serial number for units sent overseas by consulting finding for Canadian Army War Diaries, finding aid 24-60, which lists the serial number for each unit.

Custodial history:

The records in this sub-series were transferred from the Department of National Defence to the National Personnel Records Centre in 1971, when the Archives took over the Canadian Forces Personnel Records Centre. The ledgers were accessioned into the archival holdings of the NA on 15 August 1994.
