Sub-series consists of a collection of records that was assembled by Dr. William G. Brown shortly before his death in 1994.

Trained as an engineer, Dr. Brown began working at the National Research Council (NRC) in 1954, first working in the Division of Applied Biology. The next year he moved to the Division of Building Research, where he carried out analytical research on subways and ventilation, on natural convection and on theories of glass strength. With a growing interest in the economic impact of research and development, Dr. Brown joined the NRC's newly-formed Program Planning and Analysis Group in 1969. After a brief stint with the Office of Grants and Scholarship in the early 1970s, he transferred to the Division of Electrical Engineering (Electromagnetic Engineering Section). He conducted mathematical work related to the clock paradox in Einstein's Theory of Relativity, became involved in the review of the Canadian High-Energy Electron Ring (CHEER) and conducted research on industrial plasma heating. In 1987, Dr. Brown joined the NRC's Industry Policy Analysis Group in support of the Industrial Research Assistance Program. Following his retirement in 1990, Dr. Brown worked on various contract projects for the NRC until his death in 1994.

The collection's records document Dr. Brown's work on projects in his capacities as NRC research scientist, policy analyst and economic planner and analyst. Included are copies of his publications, correspondence, copies of articles, NRC studies and conference papers. Also included is a set of diaries which Dr. Brown kept from 1972 to 1993.
