Canadian Forces Training Systems Headquarters : Training Command, created in 1965, was responsible for planning and conducting all armed forces recruit training and for all individual trades and specialist training common to more than one command. Headquarters were at Winnipeg, with the branch responsible for the training of Francophones located at Quebec City. Training Command schools were at CFB Cornwallis, CFB St-Jean, CFB Kingston, CFB Borden, CFB Winnipeg, CFB Chilliwack, CFB Portage la Prairie, CFB Moose Jaw, CFB Cold Lake, CFB Esquimalt, CFB Trenton and CFB Edmonton. The commander of Training Command was also responsible for the training of cadets within Prairie Region and for providing assistance to civil authorities in the region when necessary.
On 2 September 1975, Training Command became Canadian Forces Training System (CFTS). Part of the Regular Force, CFTS is responsible to the CDS through the Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel). Its main purpose is to plan, organize and conduct all recruit, trades, specialist and officer classification training common to more than one command. CFTS Headquarters were moved to Trenton and it assumed responsibility for cadet training and assistance to civil authorities within Central Region (Ontario). At its largest, the Training System held responsibility for five bases (CFB Cornwallis, CFB St-Jean, CFB Kingston, CFB Borden and CFB Chilliwack) and twenty-two schools and units of instruction. These schools and were as follows: Training System Management Study Unit; Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics Engineering; Canadian Forces Recruit School Cornwallis; Canadian Forces School of Instructional Technique; Canadian Forces Medical Services School; Canadian Forces Dental Services School; Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security; Canadian Forces Nuclear, Biological and Chemical School; Canadian Forces School of Aerospace and Ordnance Engineering; Canadian Forces School of Physical Education and Recreation; Canadian Forces School of Administrative and Logistics; Canadian Forces Recruit School (St. Jean); Canadian Forces Technical School; Canadian Forces Language School; Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering; Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School; Canadian Forces Training Material Production Centre; English Language Training Unit; Canadian Forces School of Music; Canadian Forces Warrant Officers Academy; Canadian Forces Foreign Language School; and the Canadian Forces Junior Leaders School Borden. In 1990 the CFTS had the mandate to provide individual training for service and civilian personnel; to prepare and maintain training standards; to provide medical and dental service, social welfare, civilian personnel administration, band and chaplain services within the Province of Ontario; and to provide training facilities and administrative support to the Cadet organizations within the Province.
