Canada. Canadian Forces Base (Comox, B.C.) : Located on Vancouver Island, Comox became a Canadian Forces Base on 1 April 1966, reporting to Air Defence Command. Its integral unit was 409 All Weather Fighter Squadron, which ceased operations at Comox on 30 June 1984 and reformed as 188 Squadron at Cold Lake. In addition, during the 1970s it supported 407 Maritime and Patrol Squadron, 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, and, starting in August 1974, VU 33 Squadron. The base's mandate was to administer and support its squadrons so that they could patrol the western coastal area for breaches of Canada's sovereignty in the form of fishing and environmental violations, support MARPAC units, and carry out search and rescue operations. Comox was transferred to Air Defence Group on 2 September 1975. It was relocated from Air Defence Group to Maritime Air Group on 15 July 1982. 1 Fighter Support Unit, a Regular Force unit allocated to Fighter Group, was formed on 1 July 1984 and lodged at the base. In 1988 441 Squadron CF18 Detachment (Cold Lake) was attached to CFB Comox. On 1 April 1993 CFB Comox was renamed as 19 Wing Comox. RG 24 General Inventory
