Series consists of reports created and/or maintained by the Chief of Research and Development (CRAD) and its predecessor, the Defence Research Board. The reports cover a range of subjects including the state of Defence research and development, the Science Policy of the Government of Canada, defence industrial research, the joint CAN-UK-US Technical Cooperation Programme, military exercises, research into various operational areas, including maritime warfare, outer space, chemical warfare, and ship design (Bras d'or Hydrofoil project).

Canada. Dept. of National Defence. Research and Development Branch : In 1974 DND integrated the civilian military functions within National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ). At that time, the Defence Research Board (DRB) was disbanded and the defence research and development function and activities were integrated into headquarters. The majority of these defence scientific activities were brought into Research and Development Branch, headed by a Chief Research and Development (CRAD). The various defence research establishments across Canada, with the exception of the Defence Research and Analysis Establishment (DRAE), were also brought under the control of CRAD. DRAE was renamed the Operational Research and Analysis Establishment (ORAE) CRAD participates in the evaluation and implementation of departmental research and development activities and directs the operation of the defence research establishments across the country. At NDHQ the Branch is sub-divided into three divisions, one concerned with policy, one concerned with operations, and a third dealing with research and development services, all of which report to the Chief, who in turn reports to the Assistant Deputy Minister (Materiel).
