Canada. Canadian Armed Forces. H.M.C.S. Chippawa : The HMCS Chippawa has had a long history as a Naval Reserve Unit, beginning in 1923 when the Winnipeg Half-Company of Naval Reservists was formed. The Chippawa was located in Winnipeg as one of Maritime Command's sixteen Naval Reserve Units and supported by CFB Winnipeg and Headquarters Prairie Militia Area. HMCS Chippawa was tasked to recruit and train, both reserves and regulars, in basic naval skills. In the 1960s these skills were in four primary areas: communications, supply, boatswain and general maritime training. In the summertime, it trained students as part of the Naval Reserve Summer Student Training Programme. In 1985, the HMCS Chippawa was granted Freedom of the City of Winnipeg. In the 1990s, HMCS Chippawa provided support to three Royal Canadian Sea Cadet corps, one Navy League Cadet corps and one Navy League Wrenette corps. With the reorganization of Maritime Command in 1992, HMCS Chippawa remained part of the Reserve Force and was allocated to the Naval Reserves. RG 24 General Inventory
