Quebec, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, Canada. Governor. Despatches to and from the Colonial Office : Responsibility for Indian Affairs in Upper Canada was transferred from military to civil authority in 1796, thus making the officers in the Indian Department answerable to the Lieutenant Governor in that colony. Responsibility for Indian Affairs in Lower Canada was given to the Governor General in 1800. In 1816, jurisdiction over Indian Affairs in Upper and Lower Canada was transferred to the Commander of the Forces. In 1830, control passed once again to civil authority. With the Union of 1841 the two offices of the Department were amalgamated and placed under the authority of the Governor General. In 1844, the Indian Department was reorganized and placed under the control of the Civil Secretary to the Governor General, with the Civil Secretary taking on the title of Superintendent General.
