Sub-series consists of correspondence created and/or maintained by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Canadian Militia and his predecessor, the Adjutant General. The sub-series includes numbered files covering the period October 1868 to June 1882 (Vols. 1-21). Most of the correspondence is missing but there is a complete set of registers (Vols. 22-34; reels T-4186 to T-4193) indexes to the registers (Vols. 35-48; reels T-4182 to T-4184). A list of the extant files has been prepared.
An index to applications for employment in the militia, 1865-1877, is found in volume 49.
The sub-series also includes a second set of numbered files covering the period June 30, 1882 to 1903 (Vols. 50-298). The numbering began with 01 but the initial 0 was dropped when the numbering reached 10,000. On June 29, 1901, the numbering began anew, the number being followed by the year (eg. 288/01, 288/02, 288/03). This method continued until the introduction of the central registry system on July 1, 1903. There is a complete set of registers (Vols. 299-331; reels T-4193 to T-4220) as well as indexes to the registers (Vols. 332- 333; reels T-4184 to T-4186).
Letterbooks covering the period 1868 to 1903 may be found in volumes 334-469. Volume 334 is available on reel C-1532; volumes 334-469 on reels T-284 to T-377). There are indexes for the years 1874-1882 (see Vols. 470-478, reels T-377 to T-378).
Letterbooks of the General Officer Commanding the Canadian Militia cover the period October 1895 to April 1898 and October to November 1902 and consist of letters received, copies of letters sent and memoranda, 1881-1904 (Vol. 479, reel T-378).
The sub-series also includes telegram books covering the period February 1900 to October 1901 (Vols. 480- 481). Microfilm copies of these are available on reels T-378 to T-380).
Confidential files covering the period 1901 to 1903 are found in volumes 482-484. A register to these files is available in volume 485. Volumes 486-487 contain confidential letterbooks from November 1893 to June 1903. Microfilmed copies of these letterbooks are available on reels T-380 and T-381.
The sub-series also includes correspondence and registers of the General Officer Commanding relating to the Quebec Tercentenary celebration 1908, (Vols. 488-493); correspondence and returns relating to demobilization (Vols. 490-493); a Horse register, dates December 1914 to July 1915 from the Canadian Government Remount Commission, (Vol. 494); daily programmes of work in the Adjutant General's Office, August 4, 1914 to January 18, 1915 (Vol. 495).
Finally, the sub-series contains unnumbered correspondence and memoranda of the Headquarters staff, 1868-1909, including the Adjutant General, Quartermaster General, Director of Artillery and Master General of the Ordnance. In addition, there are a few letters addressed to the Military Secretary, the Minister of Militia and Deputy Adjutants General in the Military districts (Vol. 496).
