The series consists of records created or accumulated by Smith during his research and writing of a history published in 1992 of the CANLOAN program. CANLOAN was a program by which the Canadian government agreed to lend Canadian army officers to British units during World War II. The series includes correspondence with British Regiments' associations and fellow officers who served in the CANLOAN program, questionnaires sent to the officers and correspondence relating to the publication of the book. Also includes copies of the unpublished military memoirs of Jack McBride, Roger MacLennan, Arthur N. Stone and Smith.
