Correspondence, memoranda, and reports accumulated by the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Station at Esquimalt, 1848-1903.

The records of the Commander in Chief are arranged by geographical area until 1893 when all records were filed chronologically in one general series. In 1896, a partial reversion to the old system was made by setting up separate files for British Columbia, Esquimalt and the Behring Sea, but the general series was apparently continued for the other records.

A subject index to volumes 1-22 is located in Admiralty 155, "Station Records: Pacific, Indexes to Correspondence" (see MG 12, Adm 155, available on microfilm reel B-20).

Cartographic material consists of maps of San Juan Island: RG8M 77803-26 shows the placements of British and American camps on the Pacific coast of the island; RG8M 80103-15 shows the chosen route for invasion and the location of the Royal Marine camp on the north end of the island.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid for textual records is organized into two parts. Part One consists of a shelf list of the contents, by volume, for the 39 volumes of original correspondence of the Pacific Station records that were deposited in the Public Archives of Canada. Within some of these volumes there is a more detailed listing of the contents. Part Two describes the contents of the records of the Admiralty Pacific Station which were deposited in the British Columbia Archives in 1937 and later copied by the Public Archives of Canada. The contents of these records are arranged in subject or case files. Each of the volumes includes a list of the files bound in it. The finding aid is an edited version of these lists with the addition of certain information (notably page numbers). MSS0762 (90: Open)

General note:

RG8M 80103/15: Item is enclosure no. 1 in Rear Admiral Baynes' letter no. 41, 28 March 1860. Baynes letter, addressed to the Secretary of the Admiral in London, states that he has made arrangements with the Governor of Vancouver Island for joint military occupation of San Juan Island. The acquisition documentation file contains an organizational breakdown of the Admiralty, Pacific Station records. There is also a photocopy of an extract from the general letter dated Esquimalt Harbour, Vancouver Island the 29th Feb. 1860 no. 32, representing pages 473-477 and 481-491 of vol. 37.

Cartographic material: Item #3 of RG8M 77803/26 has a piece of heavy paper attached to one side for support. All of the items have holes punched along one side.
