Series consists of four cookbooks illustrating the culinary tastes of three generations of the family of Frances Gay Simpson (files 1-4). The Martha Field cookbook was inherited by Fanny Simpson from her childless sister Martha Field, small volume, which shows signs of considerable use, contains recipes, both ordinary and exotic, for any course of any meal, together with notes on the sources and incidental comments on the merits of some of the recipes. The compiler added useful hints on a number of aspects of domestic management; some recipes for drinks and home remedies for various aliments; and several knitting patterns.

Addresses for Richard Gay and others found at the back of the Field cookbook contributed to the dating of the volume. Fanny Simpson's fair copy of the book, which omits the recipes crossed out in the original, remains in the hands of the donor's sister. His cookbook is out of circulation; a photocopy found in file 1, and a microfilm copy reel H-1173 are available for research purposes.
